Adios Dinero

I sure have been away from the old blog, and I’m ashamed of myself. What happened was that I let my journal get behind and I’m not allowed to blog if my journal isn’t up to date. So I’m all caught up and I have time to blog now. I’ve been up to lots of crafting and doing. I rode Joey from the farm to my house and back the sunday before Labor Day. It was about 11 miles in all and we spend about 4 hours on the road, it was a good time. She did really well, but she doesn’t like industrial landscaping and manhole covers.

Before I left to come to school my sweet mother went horsebackriding with me and had fun.

I’ve been working on Matt Kinman’s banjo case some, but not enough. I don’t know when it’ll get done. It seems like every day I promise to make someone else a banjo case, I think the list includes 3 promises and 1 maybe and 3 want-to-make-ems.
Brett asked me a couple weeks ago to make him a buckwheat pillow, so I worked hard on that. It’s done and gifted, but I forgot to take very many pictures, I took the teasers and then forgot to do the rest, so you can have the teasers until I get over there to take proper ones.
As far as spinning goes, I’ve been experimenting with fiber. I’m trying to import a big load of silk from China, so if we can get reasonable shipping rates worked out that’ll be the next big deal. I spun some flax which was interesting, and also cotten and silk. I hope the linen yarn wears softer, and spinning cotten is a real chore. Silk is a dream.
The blue and purple one is the cotton, it was supposed to be green and burgundy, but I learned the “cotton doesn’t take my dye” lesson the hard way. I’ll have to buy special dyes to fool with it, or just not fool with it. Maybe when summer rolls around again I’ll be pursuaded to deal with cotton, but now I’m just a wool machine.

The rainbow cardigan is coming along. I have the back finished and have started one of the sides.

I’ve also been working on my practical stockings, but there on hold for a moment while I work on some plain get-you-through-winter socks.

The Traveler’s Stockings are coming along, I’m almost done with the first keeper sock, then I’ll have to tear out the one that was too small and finish the second.

As for the get-you-through-winter socks, I started out with the plain gentleman’s sock pattern from knitting vintage socks, and just like with the green yarn, I ended up with a totally fugly mess of a sock.

The skinny foot is my doing, it was my attempt at arch support, I always wear arch support socks, but that floppity fart leg is official. I may never waste hours on this pattern again, it’s slouched on me twice. I frogged a finished sock and started another gentleman’s fancy.

Now, why did I call this post Adios Dinero? Well, first I bought a fretless eBay banjo because old Eddie Haggard wouldn’t sell me the one I loved. Then I heard from him that he’d sell me the one I love, so of course I bought it. Then Ray Morgenweck finished my stereo wetplate camera, which is a dream.

Here are my precious banjos, the bottom one, the 1873 Dobson, being infinitly more precious than the top, which is a North Carolina mystery banjo, but has a nice shiny copper piece.

My camera is heavenly and will be even better once I learn what everything is for and how to use it.
The image from inside was wonderful. It’s a stereo camera so there are two images, both upside down and backwards. Photographing the view digitally wasn’t easy or very successful, but the sight is thrilling.
That’s my friend Chrystal in the photos, she helped me a lot and made me dinner tonight : -)

We’ve been having old time jams at the Bayou every wednesday night, it’s fun. I’ve been learning a lot of new songs. This week we did Martha Campbell, Briar Picker Brown, and Red Lick in D. The week before we did Half Past Five and Speed the Plough in G. I love my banjo lessons.
