Ain’t No Way Out
AIN’T NO WAY OUT (brett ratliff)
Well my daddy was a miner and I’m a miner too,
And I’ll be in the damned old mine until I break in two.
Well my daddy owned an old poor farm but we loved it just the same
‘Til the company said get off of this farm, get off you squatters and stay.
Well it seems like I’ll never get out of this debt at the damned old company store
and every time it comes around I get in debt some more.
Well my woman was a sweet little thing ‘til the baby starved and cried
and now she works at an old beer joint and she hustles on the side.
Well they say things never seem half so bad if you sit on the steps and sing,
but singing won’t help you a goddamn bit if you can’t read a goddamn thing.
Well I’m starting to get that old dry cough and my nails are turning blue
I guess that damned old miner’s hack is going to get me too.
